4-H Exhibits-Updated

Update: Blue ribbons all around! 4 of our projects will go onto the state fair. John's headboard exceeds size limitations and so we will lug it home tomorrow. We are relieved. That thing is heavy!
*************
For the past few weeks we have been busy sewing, sawing, quilling and painting 4-H projects. The kids have been in 4-H for about a month and they started with a bang. The annual 4-H fair is tomorrow. So this morning we loaded these projects and four kids wearing slippers into the car. The fifth one had sense enough to wear flip-flops. (The other four complained as we pulled out of the driveway that their feet were sweating.)

John reclining against the headboard that he built with Stuart. He wrote the 10 Commandments of Table Saw Safety to accompany this project.

Claire's quilling project.

Lauren modeling the apron that she sewed.

Lauren and the dog painting she has been working on in art class for the past few months.

Faith and her quilling project.

So now, I guess we can get back to algebra, language arts and history for awhile. But not for long. There's an entomology exhibit that we need to prepare for in a few weeks. (Mom, if you click on the pictures you can see them in greater detail. The quilling looks great up close.)

I love the headboard. Very cool!

I am stunned! I know for a fact the hours that YOU must have put in, overseeing these projects. You deserve kudos, girl. Jobs VERY well done. I think I'd like to buy those quilling pieces...
and while I'm at it, I'll order the apron...oh, and I've been looking for a local artist to paint me a garden scene landscape... and I'm sure Jack will need to learn how to use tools safely one day, too... :)

Or maybe we should just take the inspiration we found in yours, and go do our own, instead... what do you think? :)
Way to go, guys!

p.s. it goes without saying, love the headboard. Kudos to Stuart, too. ;)
WOW! Not only are your children beautiful, but talented as well! Thanks for sharing their accomplishments. I love the idea of the "Ten Commandments of (fill in the blank)." I am going to have to use that one, and soon!

Wonderfully talented kids...just like their mom! I have to say, Faith looks anything but enthused! She reminds me much of my CJ. I bet they'd be friends, too!

Have a great day, friend.

Melissa,

Faith looks so blah because she had been making super cheesey faces and I asked her if she could tone it down a little. So she did...to the extreme. That's my girl!

Wow. That is impressive! LOVE the headboard (is he taking orders?! Looks like it would match my pretty denim quilt quite nicely!) and those quilling pictures are beautiful! And the painting... all I can say is WOW. You have some very talented and artistic children!!! When you mentioned these 4-H projects a couple of posts ago, I secretly hoped you'd post pictures of the final projects, so thank you!

These are wonderful-looking projects. I love the shape of the apron. The quilling projects are so artistic. And, hey, I need a headboard...

l.l.,

We need a headboard for our bed too. We've been married for 15 years and have never had more than the boxspring and mattress. I guess I'll have to put John and Stuart to work on that next.

Love it all!!! John-you did a great job on that headboard. My dad sure could put you to work in the furniture business!!!

Everyone did a great job on their project. My girls love the apron and the quilling projects best. In fact, they asked if we could "quill" a little!

Good job kids and MOM! Can't wait to see and hear all about the fair.

That dog portrait is amazing (all the projects are amazing, but the dog portrait is the one that strikes me with "I could never do that" awe). It looks like a dog choir.

The Child's Story Bible

I have recommended the following book so frequently that I think a post is in order so that I may recommend it to the world. In the early nineteen hundreds, when my grandparents were growing from children to adults, when they were meeting and marrying and making ends meet during the Depression, Catherine F. Vos was at work. She had been out shopping, looking for the perfect children’s story bible. The Christian bookstores of the day must have had the same unsatisfactory fare for young children that they carry today. Her standards were high as she was the wife of a professor of theology and she could not find what she was looking for. So she started to write. The results of her writing, The Child’s Story Bible was first published in stages between the years of 1934-1936. It’s been republished in every decade since that time. My grandparents had my parents and they met and married and had me and somewhere along the way I acquired a Bible. I read from the book of Proverbs from time to t

The kids and I have been nibbling our way through the book of Isaiah for months. It's our first venture as a family into the prophets. We wrestle with the message. It's a book for our times. Isaiah wrote to his people, the people of Judah, at the dawn of a long season of international turmoil. Assyria ran rough shod over the Middle East, followed in quick succession by Babylon, Persia and Greece. According to Isaiah, each empire was brought down because of they were quick to gloat over their achievements but failed to give God the time of day. The sin of haughty eyes he calls it. I brown the meat and simmer the stew and slice a crusty loaf of Italian bread but do not bow my head before I eat. It's the little red hen complex. I ground the wheat and kneaded the dough and sliced the carrots. I don't take into account that I didn't make the carrots or the wheat grow. I forget to be thankful that there are groceries in the pantry and healthy children around the table.
